BENTON HARBOR, Mich. - What course architect Jack Nicklaus calls "a little spice in the greens" at Harbor Shores is a flavor that isn't tasting very good to some competitors at the 73rd Senior PGA Championship.During one period in his long design career, Nicklaus (left) was known for building greens with drastic undulations. At Harbor Shores, which has only been open for a couple of years, he has done it again. They are confounding, "buried elephant" putting surfaces of the highest order, the sharp teeth in a creative and scenic layout that is otherwise drawing architectural praise. "In terms of the golf course, I think it's a phenomenal golf course from tee to green," Bernhard Langer said Wednesday. "One of the world's best, I would say. But [they] could be the most severe or worst green complexes I've ever seen in my life." Nicklaus himself acknowledged the dastardly edge to his work this week.
"So many players are walking up to me and saying, 'Jack, what a
phenomenal golf course. What a beautiful place,' " said Nicklaus. "[I
said], 'Well, have you putted the greens yet?' " In the prelude
to the year's first Champions Tour major, the players have putted them
-- and tried to figure out how to hit approach shots (from generous
fairways) that finish where they want them to finish. It won't be easy. "I could be wrong, but I'm not sure it rewards the precise shot every
time," said Fred Funk. "You think you hit the shot you wanted and you
may not get rewarded for it. "

1 Vote(s)

Jason Dufner's walk-off birdie on the 72nd hole at the HP Byron Nelson Championship rightfully received the most attention of any golf shot hit over the weekend. But what about a grandstand birdie on a tournament's final hole?

That's exactly what Nick Flanagan pulled off at the Nationwide Tour's BMW Charity Pro-Am. Trailing by a shot on the final hole, the 2003 U.S. Amateur champ blew his approach over the green and, well, you have to see what happened to believe it:

Following this stroke of luck, Flanagan converted the birdie and wound up winning in a playoff for his fourth career Nationwide Tour title. After winning the developmental tour's player of the year award in 2007, Flanagan was unable to stick on the PGA Tour, finishing 169th on the money list.

Related: Golf's Greatest Strokes Of Luck

His big break, though, will go a long way towards him getting back to the big leagues. Despite this being just his second Nationwide event of 2012, the win propelled him to 11th on the money list that guarantees a PGA Tour card for the following season with a top-25 finish.

-- Alex Myers
Follow @AlexMyers3
!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");

1 Vote(s)

Jason Dufner is not sleepwalking to stardom, though his demeanor might suggest otherwise. If he weren't an Auburn man, one might conclude that he is an adherent of the old Bear Bryant line, that when you get to the end zone, act like you've been there before.

He's now gotten to the end zone twice in three starts, the second coming when he holed a 25-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole of the HP Byron Nelson Championship on Sunday to beat a 'Bama man, Dicky Pride, by a shot.

Photo by Getty Images."Jason won by one, but we've got the national title, big man," Pride said, showing more emotion for finishing second than Dufner did for winning, perhaps for good reason. Pride, 41, had been 354th in the World Ranking and has now earned a return to the PGA Tour full-time.

"All my buddies on the Nationwide Tour?" he said. "Guys, I love you, but I'm staying out here."

Meanwhile, Dufner, 35 and following a nondescript start to his career, is now, in fact, sprinting to stardom, this victory carrying him into the top 10 in the World Ranking and evoking a hint of a smile in the aftermath. His two PGA Tour victories have come in the last month, in between which he got married. Presumably, though not undoubtedly, he smiled in the wedding photo.!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");

1 Vote(s)

(Editor's note: This is another in a series of stories and interviews about how I wrote THE LONGEST SHOT: Jack Fleck, Ben Hogan, and Pro Golf's Greatest Upset at the 1955 U.S. Open.)

At left: Tommy Bolt.

TOMMY BOLT, BOB ROSBURG, SHELLEY MAYFIELD. They're all gone now, but I had the pleasure of interviewing them, along with several other legends, as I researched and wrote THE LONGEST SHOT. All three men played in the 1955 U.S. Open at the Olympic Club. And all three were highly entertaining as they recounted that historic tournament and the early days on the PGA Tour.

I was lucky to even talk to Tommy Bolt, a Hall of Famer who led after the first and second rounds of the '55 U.S. Open. They called him "Thunder Bolt" and other nicknames because of his legendary temper and club throwing. Tommy was not in good health in the spring of 2008. He was in a nursing home in Arkansas the first time I called and told me to try him again in a week or two. I called back, and although he didn't feel well that day, at his wife's urging, he took the phone. When we finished, he said he was glad we talked.

You had a pretty good tournament at Olympic.

TOMMY BOLT: Oh yes I did. A better chance than any of them, really.

Tell me what you remember about Olympic. You shot 67 in the first round and you were leading the tournament.

TOMMY BOLT: What did I finish?

You finished tied for third with Sam Snead. You led after the first round.

TOMMY BOLT: I remember Fleck beating Hogan. I know that Fleck was playing good. It was really a championship course. Yes, it was. It was one of the best courses they ever played the Open on.

One of the stories I have read was that you were in the locker room and they thought Hogan had won. They were waiting for everybody to finish and Fleck was still out on the course. He birdied the last hole to tie Hogan. Do you remember that?

TOMMY BOLT: Yes, I do. I remember that vividly.

Do you remember what happened in that locker room? I think you were cutting up with Hogan.

TOMMY BOLT: I said you little SOB. I said something like that. We always cussed one another out. And we were jabbering all over the place. And Fleck shot 65 [67, actually] and tied Hogan and beat him in the playoff.

Tell me about your memories of Ben Hogan and what you thought of him.

TOMMY BOLT: Oh boy. He was the greatest player I ever played with. As a golfer, he could out-concentrate anyone else. His concentration was better than anybody else. He just overpowered them with concentration. He kept his mind on what he was doing. That's how he beat everybody. His mind never left his business.

Somebody once asked you, who do you think is better Hogan or Nicklaus? And you said something like, "I've seen Nicklaus watch Hogan practice, but I've never seen Hogan watch Nicklaus practice."

TOMMY BOLT: I did say that one time (chuckling). I have said a lot of good things out there. I thought Nicklaus was a great player, but Hogan was just a little bit better than him.

What do you remember about Jack Fleck?

TOMMY BOLT: Although he won the tournament and beat everybody, they were not really for it too much. The sportswriters didn't like it too much.

Fleck wasn't very well known before he beat Hogan.

TOMMY BOLT: Nobody knew who he was. He had never won a caddies tournament.

Did you know who he was?

TOMMY BOLT: No. It seems like I might have played with him in Iowa one time. He came from Iowa.

What was it like for you to play the tour back in the 1950s, Tommy? What was pro golf like then for you?

TOMMY BOLT: It was tough (chuckling). You had to win some money to get out of town. You didn't have a jillion dollars thrown at you. There wasn't that much money out there. It was a lot of fun, but it was a lot of pressure.

How are you doing [now]?

TOMMY BOLT: I'm 92 years old. I'm fine. They haven't put me in the grave yet.

It's an honor for me to get to speak to you for a few minutes.

TOMMY BOLT: I appreciate that.

Tommy Bolt died three months later on August 30, 2008. He had 14 wins on the PGA Tour, including the 1958 U.S. Open, and played on two U.S. Ryder Cup teams.

Neil Sagebiel (aka The Armchair Golfer) is the author of THE LONGEST SHOT: Jack Fleck, Ben Hogan, and Pro Golf's Greatest Upset at the 1955 U.S. Open, which publishes on May 22 from St. Martin's Press (Thomas Dunne Books). It seems so dumb, really. Why on God's green fairways does it have to take so long to play a golf shot? I know they're playing for a lot of money. Still ...

Which brings me to Kevin Na, the slow-play pro who was one decent round from winning The Players Championship. Na is slow with a twist. He is Charles Barkley's hero. He waggles. He fidgets. He can't pull the trigger. The guy leading The Players Championshp was getting heckled. Heckled, I tell you. I can't ever remember that happening.

I don't like Na's pokiness and I half-shielded my eyes as he addressed the golf ball. But heckling that tortured soul while he's trying to win the biggest tournament of his life is wrong.

Karen Crouse penned a fine piece about Na's grace in in the New York Times. A snippet:

Golf is a mirror that reflects one's character while magnifying flaws: impatience, anger, dishonesty, vanity, arrogance. For all the glitches in Na's false starts, he impeccably handled the inevitable scrutiny and criticism that his preshot routine engendered. He did not blame his coach for his own discomfort, as some golfers do. He did not get defensive about his waggles, as Sergio García of Spain did when he was singled out for gripping and regripping his clubs during the 2002 United States Open at Bethpage Black.

To the contrary, Na vowed to do better.

"It's going to take time, practice and tournaments," he said, "and I'm going to try to take out the whole waggle. Honestly, it's going to be a battle."

For those who followed his round, there was a lesson in Na's grace under the magnifying glass. His preshot routine may be a work in progress, but his perspective is flawless.
I may not like to watch Na. It's golf's version of the "The King's Speech." But, considering his attitude and brutal honesty about his demons, I'll be rooting for Kevin Na. Even if it takes him longer than it should to pull the trigger.

1 Vote(s)

Ian Poulter, whose seven-under-par 65 shared the lead with Martin Laird, ranked in the top 10 following an opening round for the first time in his last 24 PGA Tour starts. Poulter's last top-10 standing after opening-day play came off a five-under 66 at Cog Hill that put him solo third in the 2010 BMW Championship. That week Poulter followed with 72-69-75 and tied for 13th. If Poulter mirrors his recent form during today's second round at TPC Sawgrass' Stadium Course, he will remain in contention in the Players Championship. The last four times Poulter stood in the top 10 after a tour event's first day, he managed to remain in the top 10 in the second round. That includes the 2010 Masters, where Poulter began 68-68 and went from a tie for seventh to the lead.2. Adams, making his 75th career tour start, also enters the second round in rarified air. He has not ranked this high following 18 holes since he was leader in consecutive starts in 2010, at Colonial (wound up tied for 27th) and the Byron Nelson (second). Although Adams ranks 104th on tour this year in scoring average before the cut (71.27), he's logged a 70.14 average in second rounds. Adams, who made eight birdies in the first round, has broken par in the second round 11 of 14 tries this season. Only three players have made more starts on tour this year: J.J. Killeen (16), Matt Bettencourt (15) and Sung Kang (15). Adams missed the cut last year in his Players debut (72-76).

1 Vote(s)

I don't remember how I learned that comedian Lewis Black -- he of the explosive rants and overly flexible index finger -- is a golfer. But as a fan of his bawdy, boisterous, and badass bits on life in modern America (politics, technology, entertainment, etc.), I couldn't let the opportunity pass. So I called his publicist and proposed sitting down for an interview about his game and whatever else was in his fertile, fantastical mind. And the good folks at Golf Digest have a better sense of humor than I might have suspected: They urged me on, saying that a Q&A would fit in -- somewhere. A date was set to meet in our mutual hometown, New York City. When Lewis isn't on the road -- about a third of the year -- he lives close to the theater district, which makes sense as he began his career as a playwright, including a graduate degree from the Yale Drama School. The comedy came later, partly as a result of hosting revues on a small stage below a restaurant owned by a friend. We met in that same theater, chatting over a small table surrounded by upturned chairs as the photographer set up on the stage for the photo shoot to follow.

Among us we were able to pack an awful lot of work into a few hours: an extensive interview, photography both indoors and on the packed streets near Times Square, and a few minutes of video. Turns out he is not only funny but indefatigable, a good trait for a stand-up.

1 Vote(s)

Which is why many in the golf world are honoring Seve today with individual tributes, each offering their own interpretation on the life and golf of the Spaniard.
As a thirty-something who grew up in the 80s, my first cognizant memory of Seve was his last major win at the 1988 British Open, although admittedly, it had little to do with his game. The thing I remember most about Ballesteros was that he was the only golfer my mom rooted for -- she is not much of a golf fan, and especially not a fan of watching it on television. But she would always take notice when Seve was on, and his march up the 18th at Royal Lytham might be the only time both of my parents were intrigued by a golf tournament's result. It might seem like a random memory, but that's why Ballesteros was, and is, a looming figure in the sport; as with any of the game's greats, his appeal wasn't limited to the golf course.

1 Vote(s)

In a story you might expect to see on the History or Discovery Channel, researchers have found evidence that a lost English colony from the 16th century may sit beneath the Arnold Palmer-designed golf course at Scotch Hall Preserve.
According to a recent story in The Seattle Times, researchers at the British Museum in London, acting at the request of a group of North Carolina historians and archaeologists, have found a symbol hidden on an ancient map that could show where members of the English colony established on Roanoke Island in 1587 settled. The "Virginea Pars" map was created by members of Sir Walter Raleigh's Roanoke Colony expeditions of 1584-1590, which was the first attempt to establish an English colony in the New World, and is said to be "unusually accurate" for its time.X literally marks the spot. (Scotch Hall Preserve golf course.)

On the map created by the leader of the 1587 colony expedition, John White, were two small patches, which were commonly used by artists at the time to make alterations to the original. One of the patches was in an area the settlers had explored, and where some historians think they might have moved.
Related: The best courses in North Carolina.

When the British Museum officials put the map on a simple light table, they found a large symbol under one of the patches that appeared to show the location of a fort roughly at or near what is now the Scotch Hall Preserve. Earlier efforts to match pottery recovered from the area to the correct time-period have also produced positive results, researchers said.

The golf course and residential community just across Albemarle Sound from Edenton is now the focus of researchers' search for the "Cittie of Raleigh," the original colony John White had settled. White left Roanoke Island and headed to England for more supplies but couldn't return again until 1590 because of the war between England and Spain. When he came back, the colony of about 95 settlers was gone.
While excavation projects are not in the plans for now, the Lost Colony Foundation members said Thursday that they were planning new research to explore the new clue about the Bertie site. We're still awaiting comment from Arnie.-- Derek Evers
Follow @DerekEvers
!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");

1 Vote(s)

In case you missed the announcement, Tuesday kicked off May, aka "Welcome to Golf Month", an initiative by Play Golf America with the intention of getting more people out on the course. As a proud sponsor, along with the PGA, we here at Golf Digest realize that intentions are all well and good, but some people need a push to pick up the clubs for the first time. Which is why they're offering free lessons.

Related: Golf Digest's beginner's guide

As a new edition for 2012, Welcome to Golf Month is utilizing the PGA's Free Lesson Month as its foundation of the program to create a welcoming atmosphere to encourage new players. Facilities may offer Get Golf Ready, introductory programs and clinics, Welcome to Golf Days and Bring a Friend activities and invite golfers of all abilities (beginner through avid), as well as free 10-minute golf lessons with participating PGA/LPGA professionals. So now you really have no more excuses.
To find a professional near you, just head over to the Play Golf America website to search all participating locations.
And for more tips on starting your new-found golf passion, check out our Beginner's Guide. -- Derek Evers
Follow @DerekEvers
!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");

1 Vote(s)

It was media day for the 2012 Travelers Championship and a light rain fell on the hills and valleys of central Connecticut, making the insurance company's iconic logo particularly apropos. The tournament's defending champion Frederick Jacobson spoke about winning his first PGA Tour title almost a year ago and surmised that the event's timing... just after US Open week... makes it more relaxing than most. Among today's top golf stars, Bubba Watson and Hunter Mahan ... world number four and five, respectively... have also captured their maiden PGA Tour wins at TPC River Highlands. The tournament, which this year turns 60, is all about giving back. With 100 percent of net proceeds going charity, Connecticut's biggest sporting event has donated over to $30 million thus far. Tournament director Nathan Grube spoke about this focus... and about the entertainment experience a visit to the Travelers Championship provides, not only for golf fans, but also for those not familiar with the game. That's something I've definitely noticed over the past several years as more and more non-traditional golf activities... for children and adults... have been incorporated into the event. The course at TPC River Highlands is laid out over a bucolic slice of undulating Connecticut countryside and features what two time winner Stuart Cink called "four of the most exciting finishing holes in the world". Playing there yesterday afternoon... even in the chill gray mist of spring... I could feel the excitement of the many Sunday's I've spent at the fan-friendly venue during the championship. (A steady supply of coffee... laced with ample quantities of Baily's... added requisite warmth). An awesome field of players has already committed, including... for the first time... GGD favorite Ryo Ishikawa. I'd been hearing rumors from my friends in Japan, and was happy to have them confirmed in Cromwell yesterday. We'll be writing more about the 2012 Travelers Championship in the weeks to come. In the mean time keep up-to-date on the latest news, get ticket info and peruse photos and videos of past tournaments at travelerschampionship.com

1 Vote(s)
