That was in "The Outlaw Josey Wales.")

In his new role, the 81-year-old film legend will meet with Back9 executives once per quarter to review programming and casting choices for the network, which is currently in talks with distributors and is slated to launch later this spring.

"It was natural to seek his advice," said Back9's chief executive James Bosworth, who was an assistant pro at Pebble Beach in the mid-1990's when he first met Eastwood.

"There's no better guy to go to for a golf media company."

No, there's not. (Courtesy of Ed)

RORY MCILROY ADMITS HE MUST resist the urge to play like Seve Ballesteros if he's to continue his relentless rise in the world rankings. Maturing in leaps and bounds, the swashbuckling world No 2 loves being the showman with a silky swing. But he knows taking on the hero shot at the wrong time is a recipe for disaster if he's to close the gap on world No 1 Luke Donald.

Believing maturity is the key to winning his second Dubai Desert Classic this week, Rors said: "Looking back at last year, there were a couple of times where I took on a shot where I shouldn't have. Like third hole at the US PGA, where I hit the tree root.

"You're trying to visualize the shot that will only come off one time out of 20 and you're sort of thinking about what would Seve do. Maybe you can take it on if you really need to make a par or birdie to win but you don't really need to be doing it on the third hole of the tournament."

McIlroy jarred his wrist attempting a Seve-style escape from trees in the first round of the US PGA in Atlanta and ended up in the hospital. He played for the rest of the week with heavy strapping on his arm and trailed home 64th behind champion Keegan Bradley.

Since then the 22-year old US Open champion has changed his game plan to play more like Jack Nicklaus than the late, great Spaniard. And it's worked like a dream as he's racked up two wins and six top-10's in 10 starts since that US PGA boob.

Brimming with confidence, McIlroy has not doubt that he has grown up quickly over the past year and matured as a golfer.

He said: "I feel like I've definitely matured a lot this past year as a golfer and probably just as a person as well. I think if you mature as a person, it shows in your golf game as well, and I feel like I can play more controlled golf when I need to.

"When you're not playing as well, you need to know your limitations. When you're 100 percent, you can take on shots. But whenever your aim is slightly off, you need to just reel it back in a little bit and play the percentages a bit more."

His goal is to become like Tiger Woods in his prime and win with his "B" game.

In Abu Dhabi he drove the ball poorly by his high standards yet still managed to clinch second place behind Robert Rock in an event where he was docked two strokes for ilegally brushing sand off his line when just off the ninth green on Friday.

And as Woods bids to win his first US Tour title for more than two years in this week's Pebble Beach Pro-Am, McIlroy will be going for his fifth win in the same time frame. Fans will expect fireworks with McIlroy playing alongside Dubai specialist Alvaro Quiros and Abu Dhabi winner Rock. McIlroy wants to make up for last year when he opened with a 65 and added a 68 but then faded to 10th with weekend rounds of 75 and 74.

All has changed since then, of course, with the demons of Augusta exorcised by that historic eight-stroke US Open triumph and an end-of-season gold run that brought two wins and a rash of top 5 finishes that saw him briefly reach world No 2 before ending the year ranked third behind Donald and Lee Westwood.

"Hopefully this is another week where I can be near the top of the leaderboard again."

His next start will come in the US, where the WGC-Accenture Match Play will signal a run of American events culminating in his eagerly awaited return to Augusta National.

Brian Keogh covers golf for The Irish Sun and contributes to a variety of golf publications.
A quartet of celebrities face off for charity in the next The Haney Project on the Golf Channel, with rockstar - or should that be reality star? - Adam Levine the big name. (Swings like Jagger?)

Levine, frontman of Maroon 5 and "coach" on NBC's smash The Voice, is joined on the series by boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard, celebrity chef Mario Batali and supermodel-turned-actress Angie Everhart.

The fourth season of The Haney Project debuts on the Golf Channel at 9 p.m. ET on Feb. 27. The series will follow Hank Haney's tutelage of the four celebs over eight episodes, culminating with the four pupils playing each other for up to $100,000 to the charities of their choice.

Note to celebs: Be careful what you do and say, because Hank might write a book about you some day!

Say this for Hank and his Haney Project: he/it gets a better class of celebrity than many other reality shows on the air.

Is it just me, or does Levine seem to be everywhere these days?

They definitely should be banned. Nerves and the skill of putting are part of the game. Take a tablet if you can’t handle it.
—Ernie Els, on long putters, 2004
Golf changed forever in 2011. Not because Bill Murray won a PGA Tour event and Tiger Woods didn’t. (Murray had help.) Or because the rule banning box grooves made a difference on the PGA Tour. (It didn’t.) Or because Rickie Fowler’s wardrobe explored parts of the rainbow where no man had gone before (excluding Jimmy Demaret and Doug Sanders).
No, golf changed forever because of the invasion of long, thin, awkward-looking alien objects. Looking back someday, golf historians will identify that watershed moment as occurring at Atlanta Athletic Club on the evening of Aug. 14, when Keegan Bradley won the PGA Championship with a belly putter, which he raised in triumph after the final stroke with no small effort, and became the first player to win a major championship with a putter anchored to his stomach. Yes, anchored to his stomach!
Traditional putting hasn’t yet gone the way of the mashie niblick, the stymie or persimmon, but prepare yourself for a brave new world, golfing purists. Seven of 30 players who competed in last year’s Tour Championship did so with a belly or long putter, including the victor, Bill Haas. Five of the winners in the last seven regular-season Tour events went long, as did eight of the 24 competitors in the Presidents Cup.
Did you know this phenomenon already has its own designation? “We call it alternative putting,” says Scotty Cameron, the game’s best-known putter designer. Alternative putting? That does sound more dignified, like an automobile seems classier if it’s preowned instead of used.
“Every pro who has come to my studio in the last three months has asked to try an alternative putter,” Cameron says. “It’s been amazing.”
So what’s really up with alternative putting? Is this a game-changing revolution or a fad?
I think it’s simply another step away from a game that’s been played for 300 years.
—Geoff Ogilvy, on alternative putters, 2011

The Birth of the Belly
The first time a golfer used a belly putter at a PGA Tour event he won by seven shots. Yet the flat stick that Paul Azinger used to win the Sony Open in Hawaii in January 2000 went largely unnoticed. Azinger had won his battle with lymphoma cancer, and he turned the Sony triumph, his first since the 1993 PGA, into an emotional tribute to his pal, Payne Stewart, who had died in a plane crash the previous fall. It’s no wonder that Azinger’s putter was overlooked.
Here’s the backstory: A few months earlier Azinger was fooling around with someone’s shortish long-shafted putter in the Gator Creek golf shop near his home in Bradenton, Fla. “I put it in my belly button, started hitting every target around the shop, took it out on the putting green and made everything,” Azinger says. “It just fit. It was a fluke.”
Azinger never completely found his ’93 best-in-America form, but he climbed back into the top 20 in the World Ranking and onto a Presidents Cup and a Ryder Cup team. In 1999, Azinger finished 111th in putting. After he bellied up in 2000, he ranked fourth behind Brad Faxon, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, only the three best putters of modern times.
The belly and the broomstick are definitely superior methods. I don’t see any reason why a guy can’t be phenomenal with those putters.
—Johnny Miller, 2011

A Better Mousetrap?
The belly putter was already golf’s club du jour by the time Bradley won the PGA with it. When Mickelson, Mr. Ultimate Purist Blade Putter, showed up with one at the Deutsche Bank Championship three weeks later, two things happened. One, “I fainted,” jokes Dave Stockton, the putting wizard who had been working with Phil. Two, alternative putting was no longer seen as a last resort for poor putters. In fact, the success of the belly putter led many to wonder, Is this actually a better way to putt?
Quite simply, the belly’s not for everyone. Stockton stopped at TaylorMade headquarters in Carlsbad, Calif., to pick up a belly putter made to his specs late last summer so he could try one before his first belly-putting session with Mickelson. The two met at a nearby practice green, where Phil stroked a pair of long putts. Then Stockton took a turn, and on his first try he holed a 50-footer. “I was smart enough to quit after one,” Stockton says. “Phil just shook his head.”
Stockton, a Mozart on the greens, could probably hole putts with a pitchfork. He’s not a fan of the belly putter and believes anything anchored to the body should be illegal, but he has seen the results. “I still think your routine is much more important,” he says, “but this club is definitely going to help certain people.”
A few years ago Dave Pelz, the renowned short-game scientist, tested students at one of his golf schools for a Golf Magazine story. He had them putt five ways, including with a belly putter, a long putter and crosshanded. The belly putter edged out the long putter as the most effective on short putts.
“It’s not a panacea,” Pelz says, “but it eliminates two things amateurs do poorly. It helps them not rotate their forearms during the stroke, and it eliminates hinging their wrists.”
The only negative with a belly putter, Pelz says, is that the more controlled arm swing used with a long shaft can affect the touch of a player accustomed to a conventional putter. “Mickelson struggled with that,” Pelz says. “He was immediately better on short putts but not as good on long putts.”
Jim Suttie, a Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher, was an advocate of the long putter long before it became fashionable. He was an early believer in the belly putter, too, after Azinger broke his out.
“I’ve been telling people to do this for a long time,” says Suttie, who estimates that 40% of his students own some sort of alternative putter. “The ideal way to putt, the purest way, is left-hand-low with a belly. When your right hand is low, your right shoulder is lower, and you push some putts. You want your shoulders level; that creates a real neutral stroke.”
Stan Utley, who works with a number of top PGA Tour players, teaches an arc-based stroke. Though Utley, an admitted traditionalist, disagrees with allowing anchored clubs, he sees value in alternatives. “Long putters cause the player to make the exact same stroke that I teach with a conventional putter,” Utley says. “When you anchor the grip end to the body, you can’t manipulate the grip in a way that pulls the top of the handle back during the takeaway or toward the target during the through swing, the biggest mistakes I see.”
Steve Flesch, 44, has used a belly putter for nearly a decade. He won three of his four PGA Tour titles with a belly putter. He considers it necessary. “It’s a means to cure the flinches,” Flesch says. “I got the flinches at 21 and have battled them my entire career. I went back to a short putter for a while, but you reach a point over a certain putt that maybe means a lot, and suddenly it’s like having a rattlesnake in your hands.”
One convert who jumped off the bandwagon is Jim Furyk. He began experimenting with the belly putter after getting some tips from Bradley at last year’s Canadian Open. Furyk knows unconventional. There’s his swing, for starters, and the crosshanded putting style his dad taught him growing up. Furyk’s putting had always been considered a strength, but last year, at 41, he struggled with his stroke and gave the belly a try, with mixed results.
“The part I liked is, it’s anchored,” Furyk says. “It does feel stable and steady. The part I don’t like is, it’s anchored. You have to determine how vertical you hold the club, your posture and your arms, and that affects the putter’s path. If you grip the club so it’s too long, you feel as if you’re going to stub it. Too short, and it feels as if it’s not anchored.”
Furyk went back to his conventional putter and crosshanded grip for the Presidents Cup, made everything and hasn’t looked back. “People ask me what I learned from using the belly putter,” Furyk says. “My answer is, I learned I had better remember how to putt with the short putter again.”
We don’t see this as a big trend. It’s not as if all the junior golfers out there are doing this. No one’s even won a major using one of these things anchored to themselves. So we don’t see this as something that is really detrimental to the game.
—Mike Davis, USGA executive director, on Golf Channel in 2011

The Belly Rebellion
Alternative putters are coming to a retailer—or maybe a golf bag—near you this year. More manufacturers are producing them and in greater numbers, and more stores are stocking them. Look in any golf shop; belly putters are multiplying like rabbits.
“We hadn’t gone gung-ho about alternative putters because there hadn’t been much of a market before,” says Titleist’s Cameron. “Now there’s a market. I think Adam Scott at the Masters last year [Scott tied for second with a long putter] made this acceptable and cool. Two years ago, when you used one of these putters, you looked defeated.”
The forecast for belly putters is decidedly bullish. According to a survey of 750 golfers by the Sports & Leisure Research Group, 17% plan to buy a new putter in 2012, up 8% from a year ago, and the amount each golfer estimates he or she will spend is $158, a 14% increase from 2011.
“Clearly, the belly putter has heightened interest, and the higher prices people are willing to spend reflect the innovation in this category,” says Jon Last, Sports & Leisure Research Group’s president. “Everything points to a resurgence in the putter category.”
Clubmakers have taken notice. Bettinardi Golf, known for its high-end custom putters, didn’t offer a belly model in 2011. Its new putter line does—the BB53, which comes in heel-shafted and center-shafted versions. “I was at the PGA when Keegan Bradley won, and that was my eureka moment,” says company founder and designer Bob Bettinardi. “So far, so good. They’re selling.”
Scotty Cameron Putters is expecting a huge year. Before Scott’s run at the Masters, Cameron says his company would sell 500 to 1,000 alternative putters a year. By the end of ’11 the number was 10,000. Cameron is gearing up to move 15,000 to 20,000 this year.
Instead of simply adding length to conventional models, for the first time TaylorMade designed its alternative putters to perform at belly- and long-putter lengths. Last year, according to Michael Fox, a TaylorMade product-marketing manager, the company sold four times as many alternative putters as in 2010, and he expects to double 2011’s sales this year. “We were back-ordered 30 days at one point last year,” says Fox.
Ping, riding the crest of Webb Simpson’s success with the Craz-E belly putter, which he has used since college, already had three belly models available and will add a fourth this spring. “We had to readjust our forecasts because our retailers had pretty robust sales during the holidays,” says Ping spokesman Pete Samuels. “I don’t see this as a fad. With so many younger players using it, that suggests it has legs.”
The belly putter is like the two-handed backhand shot in tennis 25 years ago. It was the odd guy who hit a two-handed backhand. Now if you don’t have a two-handed backhand you can barely compete, unless you’re Roger Federer. The belly putter is going to become accepted, and you’ll see more players using it.
—Brad Faxon, 2011

Fitting and Proper
If you know only one thing about belly putters, let it be this: The fit must be perfect.
Todd Sones, a Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher and the owner of Contour Golf Custom Putters, has worked with alternative putters for years. He is adamant about the importance of putter-fitting.
“Belly putting is a Jekyll-and-Hyde thing,” Sones says. “It either works great, or it doesn’t work at all. Your chance of buying a belly putter and setting up properly without professional help is like buying prescription eyeglasses from Sunglass Hut.”
Sones says a golfer using a belly putter must be tilted at just the right angle so his hands hang directly under his shoulder line. If the putter is too long, the golfer will stand too upright, forcing his hands outside the shoulder line. If the putter is too short, the club is anchored too low in the midsection, inevitably pushing the putter to the outside on the stroke.
The challenge for marketing belly putters is the fitting process. “If Dan Forsman and Steve Jones stood next to each other, they’d be the same height,” Sones says. “But Dan’s belt is, like, five inches higher than Steve’s because he’s all legs. Anyone fitting putters only by height is getting it wrong.”
For example, Sones says he recently measured a 5' 7" teenager to a 33-inch conventional putter. He needed to add 91⁄2 inches for his belly putter to fit properly. Then, Sones worked with a 6' 4" man who needed a 36-inch conventional putter, but only six more inches to cover the distance to his belly. A 42-inch belly putter fit the big man, a 421⁄2-inch model fit the teen.
“Look, the biggest fundamental mistake even the best players make is that they come out of their putt, their upper body moves, usually up and back, or they peek, which makes them open up,” Sones says. “Because the belly putter is connected to the body, it’s easier to stay down on the putt and your chances of keeping your shoulders square at impact go up. Technically, I can see the reasons why belly putting is a better way to putt—if a player is set up correctly.
“Belly putters are technically sound. If they’re done right, they will help a lot of people. If they’re done wrong, they may go away.”
Guys can have a laugh at me, that’s fine. I’ve done it to them. As long as it’s legal, I’ll keep cheating like the rest of them.
—Ernie Els, on using a belly putter, 2011

<fieldset class="fieldgroup group-article-additional-info"><legend>Article & Image Information</legend>

Keegan Bradley, 2011 PGA Champion

</fieldset>

3 Vote(s)

WHO: Kyle Stanley
WHAT: A 50-yard pitch from under a cactus to the green
WHERE: 332-yard par-4 17th hole at TPC Scottsdale
WHEN: Final round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open
To come back from the emotional roller coaster of two weeks ago, when Stanley blew a huge final-round lead, is spectacular. But last week, he had a big advantage: he was playing from behind, which put him in an aggressive -- rather than a defensive -- mode of thinking. He showed that at 17.
Stanley was aggressive off the tee by hitting driver rather than laying up on the short par 4 with water down the left side. After his tee shot landed under a cactus bush, Stanley could have chipped out and then pitched to the green. Instead, he boldly played a pitch from an awkward stance and with a hooded clubface. The aggressive play could've backfired with a whiff, a skull or another bad outcome. But Stanley was playing to win. He executed the shot perfectly, nipping the ball so it flew over a bunker, landed a bit short of the green and then rolled onto the green 22 feet from the hole. Stanley two-putted for a par.
Stanley is a player to watch. Not many guys could lose so badly one week and come back the very next week with a victory. The turnaround shows a quality of character than is very unusual on the PGA Tour.

THE DRILL: My favorite way to practice and learn recovery shots is to play one-club golf. Last week, I played an entire round with only a 6-iron. Another option is to hit driver off the tees and then play with one club (I prefer a 6-iron) for all other shots, including putts.
Playing with one club teaches you to be creative. You learn how to hit different shots and how to manipulate a single club to create a wide variety of outcomes. You're forced to be imaginative and to develop a sense of adaptability with your clubs.
Practicing like that prepares you for spots like Stanley found at 17. You may not have practiced shots from the exact situation you're in, but you'll be able to create a shot.
Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher Mitchell Spearman teaches at Isleworth Country Club in Orlando and at Doral Arrowwood in Rye Brook, N.Y.

<fieldset class="fieldgroup group-article-additional-info"><legend>Article & Image Information</legend>

Kyle Stanley, 17th hole, final round, Phoenix Open

</fieldset>

4 Vote(s)

Some fans might have the impression that Woods loves Pebble Beach Golf Links; it's an iconic course, he's won this tournament before, and he dominated the 2000 U.S. Open on this course.

But this is the first time since 2002 that Woods is playing the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Scuttlebutt over the years was that Woods hated the bumpy poa annua greens at Pebble Beach; since 2002, he had only returned once for the 2010 U.S. Open. And at that Open Woods slammed the greens.

Yet, here Tiger is, playing the Pebble Pro-Am again. Go figure.

Other "name players" in the field include Rickie Fowler, Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson, Hunter Mahan, Zach Johnson, Dustin Johnson, Padraig Harrington, Geoff Ogilvy, Ian Poulter and Nick Watney.

The defending champion is D.A. Points. And, of course, Bill Murray is among the celebrities playing. Some of the bigger names in the field include Martin Kaymer, Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy, Miguel Angel Jimenez, the Molinari brothers and Thomas Bjorn. A couple of Champions Tour players - Fred Couples and Mark O'Meara - got sponsor exemptions, as did youngster Peter Uihlein. John Daly, coming off a fourth-place finish at last week's Qatar Masters, is also entered.

Past champions and tourney trivia:

Pebble Beach National Pro-Am

Dubai Desert Classic

Course photos:

Pebble Beach pictures

Emirates Golf Club
This Week: Pebble Beach and Dubai originally appeared on About.com Golf on Monday, February 6th, 2012 at 11:16:43.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

4 Vote(s)

I’m concerned about that course you are playing on. But I digress, if your ball currently lies in a puddle of water from the sprinkler after math it is called casual water. According to Rule 25-1, you may then lift the ball and drop it within one club-length, no closer to the hole, from the nearest point of relief without penalty. Kyle Stanley did just that on Sunday at the Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale. Stanley's 65 got him to the house with a 15-under total for a one-shot victory over Ben Crane.

Watching Stanley rebound from his devastating collapse at the Farmers Insurance Open a week ago was a far more satisfying Super Bowl pregame than anything I could have watched on NBC or ESPN.

Yet one man's redemption was another man's tragedy. Spencer Levin entered the final round with a comfortable six-stroke lead, on his way to a first PGA Tour win. Sound familiar? After an early birdie, it began to unravel for Levin with bogeys at the 4th and 6th holes, and then two more at 11 and 12. A double bogey at the par-5 15th hole and the psychological damage had been done.

"It's almost like you're kind of wanting the holes to run out real quick," Levin said about holding a big lead.

Stanley could relate after his Torrey Pines nightmare. He choked up when the win was official, thanking his mom and dad (who I mentioned this past week) for all they had done for him. Overcome, he cut it short, saying, "I'm speechless." I can't say I know Matt and Michelle (Kyle's parents) well, but my wife and I did get to hang out with them during our Glendale days in Bellevue, Washington. We both agreed that Michelle may be the sweetest person on the planet.

You can't help but notice that Kyle Stanley is solid in a lot of ways. As a player, sure. Hopefully, this is the first of many wins. But he's also a solid person, well grounded, with a strong family and good people around him. That's what you need more than a good short game, because the PGA Tour (and life) are full of crazy ups and downs.

So does this mean Spencer Levin wins this week at Pebble?

3 Vote(s)

Last week at the Farmers Insurance Open, Kyle Stanley - trying for his first PGA Tour victory - suffered a final-hole meltdown. Needing just a double-bogey or better to win, he made a triple-bogey 8, then lost in a playoff.

Confidence shattering? Not for Stanley.

On Sunday, Stanley got that first PGA Tour victory at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, and he did it with one of the biggest final-round comebacks in tour history.

Stanley started the final round in Phoenix eight strokes off the lead, then fired a 65. He finished at 15-under 269, making a short but nervy winning putt of about the same length he missed a week earlier on the final hole of the Farmers.

So just a week after a horrible finish to lose, Stanley came back with a magnificent round to win. Bravo.

Stanley's comeback from 8 behind with 18 to play for the win ties for the third-biggest final-round comeback in PGA Tour history. Jack Burke Jr., Ken Venturi, Mark Lye, Hal Sutton, Chip Beck, Scott Simpson and Craig Stadler all also had wins in which they started the final round eight off the lead.

Stewart Cink won the 2004 MCI Heritage after beginning the final round nine behind.

And the recordholder in this category is Paul Lawrie, who won the 1999 British Open after beginning the final round 10 strokes behind the leader. That was the Jean Van de Velde Open. Lawrie, by the way, also won on Sunday, claiming the European Tour's Qatar Masters.

See also:

Largest final-round comebacks on PGA Tour
Remarkable Reversal for Kyle Stanley originally appeared on About.com Golf on Sunday, February 5th, 2012 at 18:16:07.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

4 Vote(s)

By Charles Prokop

Special to ARMCHAIR GOLF

Copyright © Charles Prokop. All rights reserved. Used with permission.

AFTER MUCH HEAD SCRATCHING, NAVEL GAZING, and creative napping, I've come up with my reasons to like golf. These reasons apply solely to me. Any resemblance to the reasons of others is purely coincidental, although not necessarily impossible.

I mentally thumbed through my recollections of golf experiences, looking for the most pleasant memories. Three types of events stood out: rare perfectly struck shots; fun and companionship with golf buddies; and losing myself in the beauty of nature or the experience of the game. I'll call those achievement experiences, social rewards, and spiritual immersion.

1. Achievement experiences.

Golf gives me something to work on. It's something I know I can never master, but I can expect those rare flashes of brilliance. Golf will always challenge me, but it won't be impossible for me improve. It's a challenge that will last a lifetime, and I can keep at it for a very long time. Golf is a complex skill and I'll need to change my game as I age and find new ways to play, but as long as I stay in reasonable physical shape I can participate. Few other sports, if any, offer the possibility of such a long playing career.

2. Social rewards.

Golf provides me with a structure for social interaction. I'm not very good at small talk; I need to have something going on. Golf gives me that thing to organize friendships around. The people I've played golf with throughout my life have been among my best friends, and now that I'm retired and don't meet people at work, I meet new friends on the golf course.

3. Spiritual immersion.

I can lose myself in the game. Some of my moments of deepest peace, of meditative calm, have come in the midst of rounds of golf. Sometimes it's becoming lost in the beauty of a fairway at sunset, feeling the grass and the air cooling as the sun goes down. Sometimes it's standing on the first tee at dawn, hearing the birds awakening in the trees. At other times it's becoming completely immersed in the rhythm of the round itself, thinking only about the next shot and seeing nothing but the ball and the target. It's a legal altered state of consciousness with no negative side effects.

Golf seldom gives me all three of these things in one round. In fact, it's hard to get the social interaction and the spiritual immersion simultaneously because one is outer directed and one is inner directed. But I can choose what I need and play alone or with friends, depending upon my goals.

And on those rare occasions where all three come together, where I'm playing well with good friends and that feeling of peace overcomes me, it's heaven.

Charles Prokop is a clinical psychologist who writes about golf at fairwaywords.

(Photo credit: klavr, Flickr, Creative Commons license)

4 Vote(s)

The message finally seems to be resonating throughout the golf business world: for this industry to be sustainable it's going to need to embrace some changes.

A decade of decline in participation, which ironically coincided with a period of overheated development, has left many who make their living in golf, in a precarious position. A position that doesn't allow for an exclusionary image... or even the perception of one.

From the PGA of America's recently unveiled Golf 2.0 to the USGA's "Tee it Forward" initiative, to the ongoing efforts The First Tee there's a fresh emphasis on increased accessibility and openness ...on making the game less intimidating and more friendly, fun, affordable. The theory is that all those good things will make a wider swath of the population want to take up the game... and stick with it. Women, families and young people... under-represented among today's golf population... are being courted with particular zeal, as they clearly represent the best hope for growth.

However, while strategic plans reflect this change in direction, and industry stakeholders appear to have collectively embraced it, I'm not sure everyone's being completely honest with themselves when it comes to welcoming a new... and different... attitude to the golf course.

This thought came to me while reading a recent article by inspiring LPGA player, Judy Rankin. In Breaking With Tradition, the Hall of Fame golfer writes about the often subtle, country club "traditions" that continue to make the game less-than-welcoming, ...and suggests some smart, out-of-the-box actions to address the twin issues of time and difficulty, so often cited as barriers.

The 26 time LPGA Tour winner is clearly an advocate for upping the openness and accessibility of golf, none-the-less, towards the end of her article there were a couple of paragraphs that made me wonder if avid, competitive golfers are really ready to welcome the "social golfer".

What can women do to help promote change? For starters, we can approach golf more like a sport and less like a social event. A round of golf, although friendly, should not be a chat session. You wouldn't take a break from your serve in tennis to talk for a minute. Women are faster than the general perception, but some could still play faster.

Female golfers also need to step it up on the equipment side. Good equipment is crucial to better play for slower swing speeds. Women should get informed about what's new, and those who can afford it should experiment. Technology levels the playing field, and we need to invest in the game that now really wants to invest in us.

Now here's the thing, I know quite a few golfers (including ...at times ...myself) who play purely for fun. They rarely keep score and aren't particularly concerned with setting or achieving goals. This may be due to lack of time or they may just not be competitive by nature. These folks enjoy "the game", "the social event" and "the outdoor experience" in equal parts, and they generally play with used balls and equipment that's slightly, um, "retro", but... they're as well-versed in golf etiquette as the most avid competitive golfers, thus pace-of-play is never a problem with them. In fact, they often find themselves slowed down by the more "competitive, goal-oriented types" who A. search endlessly for their expensive lost balls B. mark every single putt C. spend excessive time reading greens D. obsessively wash their balls and replace their club covers.

Don't get me wrong, I see where Judy Rankin is coming from and agree that players... male or female... who don't adhere fully to the rules of golf etiquette and pace-of-play are an anathema to the game. What concerns me though, is that in the midst of this unprecedented industry-wide effort to grow the game and keep players in it, there may still be a substantial block of "avid golfers" who aren't quite ready to set out the welcome mat for anyone they consider a "social golfer". In fact, there's already ample evidence of this on the golf message boards.

The fact is, "Social Golfers" will need to be a key part of any strategy that aspires to drive new players to the game and even more so when the goal involves re-engaging lapsed players. What this makes clear to me is that the programs being put into place to grow the game must include new and innovative approaches to communicating, teaching and reinforcing golf etiquette. More than anything else this may eventually lead to a warmer welcome for new players and a more positive perspective on "Social Golfers".

4 Vote(s)

Golf club makers have a similar goal when it comes to making drivers: build something that's light and easy for the average player, but make it pack a wallop.
With its new CG Black driver, Cleveland Golf hopes that it has created this combination for players whose swing speed is less 100 mph.
The CG Black features a head that is aerodynamically shaped to slip easily through the air, with a crown that slopes down in the back section more sharply than last season's Launcher Ultralight drivers. Cleveland's head of metalwood development, Nate Radcliffe, says that the shape of the crown decreases the club's drag throughout the downswing, which in turn helps players generate more clubhead speed.
At the same time, the 460-cc head has one of the lightest and thinnest faces Cleveland Golf has ever designed. Radcliffe says the faceplate is very thin on the perimeter, which not only saves more weight, but also broadens the CG Black's sweetspot.

Add to that mix a new Golf Pride grip that Cleveland says is half the weight of a typical grip and a special edition Miyazaki C. Kua Gold shaft and you've got a driver on Weight Watchers.
However, Cleveland put a little bit of that saved weight back into the head, adding a weight screw to the back of the sole plate. By adding weight to this key area, Radcliffe says the CG Black should naturally hit the ball on a higher launch angle to maximize carry distance, which is essential for slower-swinging golfers who want more distance.
"The overall package is a club that is designed to generate speed and be really easy to hit," says Radcliffe.
That's music to the ears of distance-hungry golfers looking to land a few haymakers on their opponents.

<fieldset class="fieldgroup group-article-additional-info"><legend>Article & Image Information</legend>

Cleveland CG Black and CG Black Tour

</fieldset>

5 Vote(s)

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Last week’s PGA Merchandise Show was, once again, an embarrassment of riches. It’s a golden age of equipment, a time when all the big manufacturers -- and even some small ones -- make superior gear.

I’ve already named my 10 favorite items, but those were just the beginning of the most notable things I saw at The Show.

Oakley Golf was this year’s biggest surprise for me. They’d been only marginally in the golf business, to my mind, with sunglasses and efforts to spin off some of their trendy footwear as golf shoes.

So I didn’t expect much when I checked out their gear, but I was stunned. The Oakley Cipher shoe was remarkable, but so was the company's high-tech apparel. Oakley hired some talent away from UnderArmour and adidas, went all-in for technology and signed some prominent names to wear its stuff—Rory McIlroy, Keegan Bradley, Ryann O’Toole and Rickey Barnes. My favorite was a windbreaker with removable sleeves. That idea isn’t new, but this jacket had a real innovation: you unzip the sleeve partway up and then neatly fold it, still-attached, into a pouch hidden on the inside of the vest. It’s totally out of the way, and you can't lose the sleeve. Ingenious.

A Swedish outfit I’d never heard of, Cross, also impressed. The kings of raingear are FootJoy, ProQuip and Sun Mountain, but Cross is suddenly in the mix with its FTX Full Stretch rainwear. It’s soft and unusually stretchy and quiet. It reminds me of ProQuip’s Silk Touch raingear from a few years back, as soft as a sweater but impervious to water. Plus, Cross has slick European style. Only a few online outlets carry Cross gear, and keep in mind that it’s cut to European sizes. The large pullover fit me nicely, but if I were going to wear it with a sweater or vest underneath, I’d probably have to go up a size to extra large. I’m pretty sure this is going to be my next rainsuit. The jackets go for $275-$300, the pants for $225.

In addition to the RocketBallz line, I was also impressed by the new TaylorMade ATV wedges. With their beveled leading edges and versatility, the ATVs are a big improvement for TM.
I like that Titleist broke out of its traditional mold ever so slightly and painted its new Velocity’s numbers in yellow-orange ink. Also impressive on the ball front was the Callaway Hex, which a fellow hacker in the industry told me was the best ball he’d ever played -- “phenomenal,” in his words. I also played nine holes in an outing with the Innovex V-Motion Tour ball and was impressed. Its playing characteristics were comparable to top-of-the-line balls, but they’re about $29 a dozen.

Nobody ever talks about spikes. Well, I do, but only to complain when I'm trying get them changed. Champ spikes has a new model out -- the Zarma -- with six longer, spidery legs that have a little more bounce, cushion and give.

I never get tired of looking at or trying out new drivers. The Adams Speedline Fast 12 has a more bulging head and a flared fantail, and it felt great when I hit it on Demo Day. I also liked the classic style of the Ping i20 driver and its flat-black paint job. No driver looks better than the Cleveland Classic, which looks like an old persimmon and gets my vote for Prettiest New Driver.

I also got a chance to swing a unique club at Demo Day, the new Exotics 11-degree 3-wood from Tour Edge. It’s got a large, flattish head and is perfect for the golfer who needs a backup driver during his round.

You’d have been hard-pressed to find more than one belly-putter in almost any golf shop a year ago, but golf’s newest trendy club was all over The Show. Everybody has a version. TaylorMade has its Ghost Manta series, a large center-shafted mallet with a white head and alignment markings. The Ping Nome has a similar mallet shape but is more rounded, and it had a really balanced feel that I liked. The Odyssey Metal-X is based on the Sabertooth model that Keegan Bradley used to win the PGA Championship last year, with two prongs behind the face. Bradley’s Tooth was white. The Metal-X is gun-metal black.

How about gadgets? Golf Buddy’s GPS rangefinders now have audio, so you don’t have to constantly check the screen. You can clip one to your belt, maybe even your hat, and it will announce distances as you move around the course. If I jack the volume up, I bet I can annoy my playing partners. I love that idea. Bushnell tweaked its classic laser rangefinder. The new Tour Z6 is more compact and attractive, and the numbers now light up in electric red instead of the usual black. It sounds like a minor change, but it makes the yardages much easier to see. Bushnell says it can hit targets up to 450 yards; from 125 yards and in, it provides distances to a tenth of a yard. It’ll be available in April.

Sky Caddie is the Cadillac of the GPS market, with accurate and up-to-date course information. Sky Golf, which makes Sky Caddie, has also expanded into a new area with Swing Labs, a launch-monitor-based fitting system that aims to help club pros, club-fitters and retailers match golfers with the perfect clubs.

I will go to extreme lengths to distract my opponents. Hence, a new Hello Kitty headcover for my driver. Hello Kitty Golf, as absurd as it seems, is going to sell a lot of accessories. Women, especially, were buzzing around that booth at The Show. They sell women’s and children’s clubs, bags and accessories. In the same vein, I may pull out some Chromax golf balls, which have colorful metallic finishes, kind of like lawn orbs. They come in seven colors, including turquoise, silver, pink and yellow, and they’re much easier to see than a standard white ball. The suggested retail price is $20 for a six-pack.

I can’t believe I’m about to write this, but I was also impressed by the Jacqueline Kennedy Collection. It’s a line of historically accurate jewelry, sunglasses, hats and accessories that has been approved by Caroline Kennedy. Why was this company at the Show? Because the collection will be sold in golf shops. Prices will vary, but most of the jewelry will be under $100.

More on shoes: adidas has two eye-catching models, the Crossflex and the Puremotion. The Crossflex, which weighs just 10.6 ounces, has molded traction areas on its soles instead of spikes and is modeled after a running shoe. The Puremotion is a mesh shoe based on the shape of the foot, and it’s also spikeless. They’ll be priced somewhere around $100-$120 and will be available in late spring. True Linkswear updated its models from last year and made them more contemporary. The phx model has a striking red stripe on the outside of the shoe and gripping nubs in the sole for traction instead of spikes. The Stealth is a leather model. They’re all very comfortable and light and are continuing the trend away from spikes.

<fieldset class="fieldgroup group-article-additional-info"><legend>Article & Image Information</legend>

Hello-Kitty.jpg

Balls.jpg

</fieldset>

4 Vote(s)

PGA TOUR PLAYER DAVE HILL, who died last September, penned his book TEED OFF with the help of Golf Digest editor Nick Seitz in the late 1970s. Hill was a talented and controversial pro who often led the PGA Tour in two categories: fines and suspensions. Following are some of Hill's thoughts on caddies, including a funny anecdote concerning Orville Moody's bag man.
Good caddies are more important than jockeys on horses. Also they can adjust from one player to another. Most of the others can't. They either don't give you anything but the yardages or else they want to play the game for you. I'd say there are a half dozen real good caddies on the tour. The rest are just bag-toters. The good ones aren't with the best players in most cases. I don't think Jack Nicklaus asks much of his caddie....

Golfball is a good caddie and so are Frog and Del. You don't deal in last names with the caddies, just first names, and they have some beauties. There's also Turk and Rabbit and Bit Fat Mitch and Ol' Roy, and they're every bit as colorful as their names....

The all-time character, though, was a caddie who worked off and on for Orville Moody. He was in the Army with Orville. He had boxes full of cards with yardages that he kept tucked away in safe deposit boxes in a bank. He would practice his pacing stride on a football field by the hour. When he went into a shoe store he wouldn't buy a new pair of shoes until he was convinced he could pace off an exact yard in them. One time during the Crosby tournament he had a dream that he had a bad yardage on a hole, so he got up at 2 a.m., and drove to the course, and repaced the hole with a flashlight. Another time he informed Orville, dead serious, that a course was 133 feet longer than it had been the year before. Then there was the time at Indian Wells in Palm Springs that he walked through a water hazard up to his neck to get his yardage on a straight line from tee to green.

He was unbelievable. You had to say he was dedicated to his job.
Hill won 13 times on the PGA Tour but no majors and played on three U.S. Ryder Cup teams. After turning 50, Hill collected six more titles on the Champions Tour. His brother, Mike, also had a long pro career, winning on both tours.

−The Armchair Golfer

More Voices:
Frank Beard

4 Vote(s)

Keegan Bradley, the 2011 PGA champion and rookie of the year switched apparel sponsorship from Oakley to Tommy Hilfiger early this year. But at the Farmers Insurance Open last weekend, Bradley was still wearing Oakley footwear. What gives?
Apparently, Oakley lost a heated bidding war for Bradley to Tommy Hilfiger, a golf line licensed to the Fletcher Group of Canada which also makes Sunice. Oakley wanted to keep Bradley, but the rising star commanded as much as five times what Oakley had been paying him to wear its apparel. Executives familiar with the action estimated Bradley's eventual deal to be in the $500,000 range.
However, Tommy Hilfiger does not make golf shoes, so Bradley will continue to wear Oakley's advanced Cipher shoes -- with their sandpaper-like soles and ultralight weight -- under a separate contract.
G-Mac's eyes were smiling
Ireland's Graeme McDowell, who had two incredible shots last weekend -- a hole-in-one and a ricochet birdie -- also signed a new apparel sponsorshipin January, with Dublin-based Kartel. Alan Swan, the chairman of Kartel, said that when he first met McDowell to propose a deal, the two of them were wearing nearly identical cashmere sweaters. That helps. He then made three sample outfits for the Irish pro, who found that they exactly suited his style. Kartel, which dresses Padraig Harrington, too, specializes in mercerized cottons, classic fitted trousers and soft sweaters. This spring the company introduces a new full collection, G-Mac by Kartel, based on the clothes McDowell will be wearing on tour.

<fieldset class="fieldgroup group-article-additional-info"><legend>Article & Image Information</legend>

Keegan Bradley

</fieldset>

4 Vote(s)

LOST AND FOUND
Rules Guy,
I topped my tee shot into the bank above a water hazard not far from the tee box. It was close enough for me to look for the ball, but after a couple of minutes I got nervous that we'd be holding up traffic, so I declared my ball lost, scampered back up to the tees and hit again. As I drove my golf cart towards my second drive, I spotted my first ball on the far bank, in the hazard but playable. I had no idea what to do: I definitely found my ball before the five minute "time limit," but I had already declared it lost and played a ball that I had no intention of being provisional. Could I have played the first ball? SHOULD I have played it? I've never been so confused on the golf course!
-- Tim Becker, Hoboken, NJ
This question hits upon one of the most misunderstood Rules of Golf: You can't actually "declare" a ball as lost; it's either lost or it isn't. According to Decision 21-1/1, your second ball was not actually considered in play, as you found your original ball before taking a second stroke at the provisional. This, however, does not mean that you were forced to play your first shot. You were, of course, more than within your rights to go back to the tee and take a penalty of stroke and distance. So, as it turns out, whichever choice you made would have been legal. The only thing not to do was stand around looking confused.

<fieldset class="fieldgroup group-article-additional-info"><legend>Article & Image Information</legend>

Ask the Rules Guy

</fieldset>

3 Vote(s)

WHO: Kyle Stanley
WHAT: A 65-yard wedge into the water
WHEN: Final round of the 2012 Farmers Insurance Open
WHERE: 570-yard par-5 18th hole at Torrey Pines

Golf is easy looking in the rearview mirror. Still, it's hard to understand how Stanley couldn't make a double-bogey at 18, which would've given him the title. It took several huge mistakes for Stanley to make an eight, which dropped him into a playoff that he lost to Brandt Snedeker.
Stanley's mistakes included laying up with his second shot instead of blasting his second shot at or over the green; hitting a wedge approach with so much spin that it sucked back off the green and into the water; and finally, three-putting. The wedge into the water might be the shot that Stanley most regrets, because hitting a no-spin wedge from 65 yards is easy.

THE DRILL: To take the spin off a wedge, you've got to radically decrease the angle of attack into the ball by using what I call a "sweepy" instead of a steep release. You also need to move the ball a little further back than normal in your stance and shift your weight a little more to the target side than you would do with a standard shot.
To practice no-spin wedges, take practice swings by holding the club with only your right hand. Hold the club at the bottom of the grip so that your right hand (for a right-hander) touches both the grip and the shaft; the butt end of the grip should be near the middle of your right forearm. Make a little backswing and sweep through impact. Just after impact, the butt end of the shaft should hit your right forearm and the shaft should align down your arm. The club and your right arm should remain in that synchronized position for the first half of the follow-through. I like doing this drill without a ball, but you can hit shots using the same technique.
Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher Brian Manzella teaches at English Turn Golf and Country Club in New Orleans.

<fieldset class="fieldgroup group-article-additional-info"><legend>Article & Image Information</legend>

Kyle Stanley, 72nd hole, final round at Torrey Pines

</fieldset>

4 Vote(s)

Tiger Woods hasn't won a European or PGA Tour tournament in more than two years, and Robert Rock (and his hair) have made Woods wait at least two more weeks.

Rock won the European Tour's Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship on Sunday by one stroke over Rory McIlroy, with Woods among a group tied for third, two behind Rock.

Woods and Rock shared the third-round lead, but in the final round Rock carded a 2-under 70 to Woods' even-par 72. Woods started the back nine with a bogey, then made eight straight pars to the finish.

Woods won in his last start of 2011, at his own Chevron World Challenge. But that short-field tournament is not a tour event. Tiger's last win in an official tour tournament was at the 2009 JB Were Masters in Australia, an Australasian Tour tournament co-sponsored by the European Tour. Woods' last PGA Tour victory was the 2009 BMW Championship.

But for the most part, Woods' swing looked great in Abu Dhabi this week, just as it did a little more than a month ago when Tiger won the Chevron. Putting remains an issue. It's probably the case that Woods is about to be a regular winner again; it's definitely the case that he's going to be regularly in contention again going forward.

Woods' next opportunity is in two weeks at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
Rock Rolls Over Tiger In Abu Dhabi originally appeared on About.com Golf on Sunday, January 29th, 2012 at 08:13:04.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

2 Vote(s)

Amateur Lydia Ko is only 14 years old, but she's been turning heads for a couple years already. One year ago, in the New South Wales Open on the ALPG Tour, Ko finished one stroke behind the winner, Catherine Hedwall.

That was Hedwall's first victory as a pro, and Hedwall went on to win the LET Rookie of the Year Award.

This year, Ko made sure not to fall just short. At age 14, she won the title at the New South Wales Open by four strokes over runner-up Becky Morgan.

In so doing, Ko became the youngest-ever winner - male or female - of a significant professional tournament. The previous youngest winner of a women's tournament was Amy Yang, who was 16 1/2 when she won the LET- and ALPG-sanctioned ANZ Ladies Masters in 2006.

The previous overall recordholder was Ryo Ishikawa, who was 15 years, 8 months old when he won the Munsingwear Open KSB Cup on the Japan Tour in 2007.

The 2012 NSW Open didn't have the strongest field, but there were "name" players: Ko beat Lindsey Wright by five, Katherine Hull by six, Melissa Reid by 13 and Laura Davies by 14.

Ko had rounds of 69, 64, and 69, to finish at 14-under 202.

Not surprisingly, Ko is the No. 1-ranked amateur in women's golf. Earlier this month, she became the first-ever golfer to hold the women's Australian Amateur, New Zealand Amateur, Australian Strokeplay and New Zealand Strokeplay titles simultaneously. Her current handicap is +5.5, according to her website.

Ko was born in Korea but her family moved to New Zealand in 2003 to find better weather in which Ko could practice golf. According to an Associated Press article, Ko will play in about 30 tournaments this year. Most of those will be amateur events, but she will be playing the Australian Masters and LPGA Australian Open over the coming two weeks.
14-Year-Old Wins Women's NSW Open, Breaking Age Record originally appeared on About.com Golf on Sunday, January 29th, 2012 at 12:12:31.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

2 Vote(s)

You've probably had similar experiences.

Back in dark ages... before the Facebooks and Twitters and such... this kind of info-exchange just didn't happen much, there was just no easy way for like-minded people to connect. Particularly if you lived in a distant city or on a far-away continent.

...and so many fantastic golfers.

This came to mind recently when a friend told me she was thinking of taking an early summer trip to Spain... and hoped to play some golf while there... but didn't really know where to begin. Not being a particularly adventurous type, she was vacillating, and asked me if I could recommend anything. Now, I've never played golf in Spain and don't know much about the country's courses, but thanks to social media I know about a dozen people who have played in Spain... and who know first hand about Spanish courses. I'd have no trouble deciding where to spend my time in Spain... and, in fact, I hope to make that trip some day myself. As for my friend, at this point she "doesn't do social media", but I think I may have convinced her to give it a try.

Of course there are some great websites for planning golf holidays in Spain, but if you can get extra input from someone you know... all the better, right? You may even find a Spanish playing partner, and that's the amazing power of Social Media.

4 Vote(s)

Kyle Stanley saw a seven-shot lead fritter way on Sunday afternoon at the Farmers Insurance Open. But three shots is a comfortable cushion with one hole to go, the relatively short but tricky par-5 18th on the South Course at Torrey Pines. All Kyle had to do was put his ball in position and keep his wits and he would walk off with his first of hopefully multiple PGA Tour titles. He is just 24.

Then splash. Or, to be more accurate, ripples. Inexplicably, the golf ball went into the water.

Stanley's three-quarters wedge shot flew beyond the hole but spun too hard, eventually trickling into the pond that fronts the 18th green. He ended up with a triple-bogey 8. Playoff. Brandt Snedeker bested Stanley on the second hole of sudden death when the PGA Tour sophomore caught the edge of the cup with his par try. It was over.

I couldn't help but think of Kyle's parents (Matt and Michelle) as I watched the playoff, how nervous they must be, the agony they must have felt as they watched Kyle stumble at the finish and head back out onto the course for the playoff.

I knew Matt and Michelle from periodic social events at Glendale Country Club in Bellevue, Washington, where my father-in-law, Ed, was a member. Matt and Ed were golf pals and friends. This was perhaps 15 years ago. Kyle was a kid, about 9 or 10. We used to watch him run around on the clubhouse lawn with his sister. There was a group of us that would gather for Memorial Day and Labor Day barbecues at Glendale. I wasn't a member. I was a guest, a guy in the buffet line and an occasional "son" of Mel in the father-son tournament. It was an opportunity to eat too much and make small talk with people I saw twice a year.

There was Kyle throwing a baseball or football out on the grass with his older sister. Every once in a while he'd make a breathless pit stop at our table to check in with his mom and dad. That kid out on the lawn turned out to be a phenomenal golfer. He was an All-American at Clemson and won the 2009 Ben Hogan Award, the most prestigious award in men's college golf. He then played on the Nationwide Tour before advancing through Q-School and joining the PGA Tour last season.

I remember seeing Kyle at the 2009 Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina, pounding balls on a sweltering August afternoon. I had a fleeting thought of saying something to him but quickly reconsidered. He wouldn't know me. What would I say? I used to eat ribs and corn on the cob with your dad on Memorial Day weekend.

I still get occasional calls from my brother-in-law, John, who was also a part of that Glendale gathering. "Hey, did you hear about Kyle Stanley?" He made the cut at the U.S. Open. Or he's near the lead in Boise (when he was playing the Nationwide Tour).

I got one of those "Kyle" messages a little more than a year ago from Karen, who along with her husband, Lance, also sat with us and the Stanleys in the Glendale dining room.

"Ever thought about looking into Kyle Stanley?" she wrote in an email. "He is not winning but I see on Sunday reports that he hangs around the 10-30 spot. Big Ed loved Kyle."

Kyle Stanley will learn from his tragic finish at Torrey. He will win. I'm a believer. He has the talent, work ethic, character and determination. I hope it's soon, this season. When that first win comes, it will be that much sweeter.

−The Armchair Golfer

2 Vote(s)

Yes, Tiger Woods won the last tournament he played in 2011, and when you haven't won in two years - when you're struggling to return to form, to the form of the greatest player on the planet, from swing changes, injuries and personal troubles - any win is a good win. But Woods' win in his own Chevron World Challenge was not a tour win.

Can Woods finally get another tour win on Sunday at the European Tour's Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship? He ended Saturday tied for the lead with Robert Rock at 11-under. Woods' scores have improved each round, from 70 to 69, then to 66. He had four birdies, including one on No. 18, over a back-nine 32 on Saturday.

Once again, though, Tiger's putting hasn't been great, with two rounds of 30 or more putts (including 35 in Round 1). Whether Tiger pulls out the win or not on Sunday will come down to his putting.

Rory McIlroy is among the golfers tied two strokes behind Woods and Rock, and McIlroy would be tied at the top if not for a penalty during the second round. McIlroy brushed sand out of his putting line, but unfortunately for Rory the area he brushed included the fringe. Sand is a loose impediment when it's on the green; off the green it's not, and the fringe is off the green.

Abu Dhabi scoreboard
Tiger Takes Lead Into Final Round in Abu Dhabi originally appeared on About.com Golf on Saturday, January 28th, 2012 at 08:45:18.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

3 Vote(s)
