Woods-Stricker Suffer Worst Loss in Presidents Cup History

No, Day 1 was not a good day at the 2011 Presidents Cup for Team USA captain's pick Tiger Woods, nor for his partner Steve Stricker. Adam Scott and K.J. Choi, on the other hand, quite enjoyed their partnership. And Scott's caddie Steve Williams probably enjoyed the day.

Scott and Choi beat Woods and Stricker by a score of 7-and-6 in the anchor match of Day 1 foursomes at Royal Melbourne on Thursday. That means Woods and Stricker tied the Presidents Cup record for worst loss in a match. Or, to put it a more positive way, Scott and Choi tied the tournament record for largest margin of victory in a match.

In Presidents Cup history, only one other match has ever been decided by a 7-and-6 score. In a singles match at the 1996 Presidents Cup, International David Frost beat USA's Kenny Perry 7-and-6 in singles.

Woods and Stricker had gone 4-0 as a team at the 2009 Presidents Cup. After that thrashing, Captain Fred Couples separated them for today's fourball matches, pairing Woods with Dustin Johnson and Stricker with Matt Kuchar. (Couples might have been planning to separate them all along, it should be noted, since Woods earlier in the week suggested that he might be playing with Johnson at some point.). International captain Greg Norman broke up the Scott/Choi team for Day 2, too, pairing Scott with Kyung-tae Kim and Choi with Geoff Ogilvy for fourballs.

While Day 1 ended well for the Internationals, that match was their only win on the day. Team USA won three matches and the sides halved two matches, giving the U.S. a 4-2 lead.
