New WGC Tournament Added in South Africa

Posted by topdog 405 days ago Golf News
It's been a momentous few days for South Africa golf:
  • On Sunday, South African Charl Schwartzel won the 2011 Masters.
  • On Monday, Ernie Els said the Sunshine Tour planned to change the date of the 2011 South African Open, which had been in conflict with the Presidents Cup. The tour confirmed that today, clearing the way for Els, Goosen, Schwartzel, et.al., to play both in their home championship and the Presidents Cup.
  • And today, the Sunshine Tour commissioner announced a new World Golf Championships tournament, with a $10 million purse, to be played in South Africa late in the year.

The "Tournament of Hope" will be the fifth WGC tournament, and the second outside the United States. Sunshine Tour commissioner Gareth Tindall said that with this addition "essentially we are starting the world tour."

If Australia adds its own WGC tournament, and Asia adds another either in the Middle East or Southeast Asia, and Europe gets one, then, well, a world tour we shall finally have. Tindall seems to think that is the way it is going.

The WGC Tournament of Hope is contracted for a five-year run. "While the exact dates and venue are still to be confirmed, the event, which will feature the top 70 players on the Official World Golf Ranking, will be closely linked to building awareness of poverty and the HIV/Aids pandemic in Africa and will be known as the Tournament of Hope," the announcement on the Sunshine Tour website states.

According to the Associated Press, the expected date is the first week of December, which would conflict with Tiger Woods' tournament, the Chevron Challenge. Tindall acknowledged that with essentially a shrug of the shoulders, quoted by the AP thusly: "They will have to move it (the Chevron Challenge), unfortunately for them. They moved the Tiger Chevron Challenge to the same date as the Nedbank Golf Challenge without any consultation so I suppose it's a bit of payback time. They need to move that date."

Do you get the feeling the rest of the world's golf tours are tired of being pushed around by the USPGA Tour and American golf in general? With international golf in ascendance, now is a good time to push back.
