It's Woods vs. Williams in Presidents Cup Pairings

Posted by topdog 188 days ago Golf News
The pairings for Day 1 at the 2011 Presidents Cup are out, and the marquee matchup is Tiger Woods vs. Steve Williams.

Hmmm, that doesn't sound right. There are other people involved in the match, aren't there? And Williams is only caddying, not playing, right? Tiger vs. Stevie - that's what's getting all that attention.

OK, the full pairing is Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker against Adam Scott and K.J. Choi in the last of six foursomes matches on Thursday. Williams, of course, caddies for Scott now.

Was the Woods-Williams feud destined to dominate Presidents Cup talk anyway? Maybe. But it definitely is now.

"I think it's great for the tournament," International captain Greg Norman said. "It needed to be done."

Not sure I'd go so far as to say "it needed to be done." Personally, I wish the Woods-Williams catfight would just go away. But this pairing - which the captains say was coincidental, not planned - does pump up the hype for Day 1 Down Under.

I wonder whether those involved in the match are happy about it? I imagine Williams is - a chance to stick it to Woods. But I bet Woods and Scott would just as soon be playing someone else (or does this defuse the tension so might as well get it out of the way?). And Choi and Stricker? Innocent bystanders.

See our Presidents Cup page for the full first-day foursomes pairings.
